South Africa secures victory in Pretoria

South Africa emerged victorious over Scotland in a Nations Championship fixture held in Pretoria. The match saw South Africa triumph with a final score of 42-28. Scotland demonstrated resilience, twice narrowing significant deficits of 14 and 21 points against the double world champions.

Despite their efforts, Scotland was unable to secure their first Test win against the Springboks on South African soil. A key moment in the match was identified as a missed opportunity for Scotland when South Africa had a forward in the sin bin early in the second half.

Both teams had previously secured victories in the opening round of the Nations Championship. Scotland achieved a record-breaking win against Argentina in Cordoba, while South Africa defeated England at Ellis Park.

Team selections and key moments

South Africa made 11 changes to their squad for the match, while Scotland made three alterations. Finn Russell, Zander Fagerson, and Gregor Brown were promoted to Scotland‘s starting line-up. A late change on the Scotland bench saw Max Williamson replace his injured club-mate Alex Samuel.

The match marked the first time Scotland had faced the Springboks in Pretoria. Rory Sutherland, a prop for Glasgow Warriors, earned his 50th cap when he entered the game from the bench, leading both teams onto the field.

South Africa opened the scoring with a try from scrum-half Embrose Papier in the 16th minute, converted by Handre Pollard, making the score 7-0. Shortly after, Evan Roos scored South Africa‘s second try in the 19th minute, also converted by Pollard, extending their lead to 14-0.

Scotland responded in the 33rd minute with a try from Matt Fagerson, converted by Russell, bringing the score to 14-7. Just before half-time, Kyle Rowe scored Scotland‘s second try, with Russell converting to level the scores at 14-14 by the interval.

Second-half action and scoring

At the start of the second half, Rory Darge was replaced by Josh Bayliss after failing an HIA. South Africa‘s Ben-Jason Dixon received a yellow card following a TMO review for contact to Scott Cummings‘ head.

South Africa regained the lead in the 57th minute with a try from substitute back-row forward Elrigh Louw, converted by Pollard, making it 21-14. This was followed by a try from Damian Willemse in the 60th minute, again converted by Pollard, pushing the score to 28-14.

Replacement prop Zach Porten scored South Africa‘s fifth try in the 66th minute, with Pollard maintaining his perfect kicking record to make it 35-14. Scotland quickly responded, with Josh Bayliss scoring a try in the 67th minute, converted by Russell, narrowing the gap to 35-21.

Ben White secured a bonus point try for Scotland in the 70th minute, converted by Russell, bringing the score to 35-28. However, Jesse Kriel scored South Africa‘s sixth try in the 77th minute, converted by Quan Horn, sealing the 42-28 victory for South Africa.

Scotland‘s captain Sione Tuipulotu delivered an outstanding all-round performance, leading the team for the full 80 minutes. He gained a match-high 72 metres, including 14 carries and two clean breaks. Finn Russell was noted for his attacking skills, creating several try-scoring opportunities and slotting four conversions.

Kyle Rowe also made an impact, gaining 54 metres, including two clean breaks and beating five defenders, in addition to scoring a first-half try. Jack Dempsey was effective with ball in hand, gaining 44 attacking metres and making a joint team-high 15 tackle completions.

Matt Fagerson, who scored a try, made 15 hits on defence. Scott Cummings impressed with his lineout work and gained 30 metres as a ball carrier. Pierre Schoeman, despite an early penalty concession, came back strongly, winning a scrum penalty and making 13 tackles.

The efforts of Scotland‘s replacement players, including Gregor Hiddleston, Max Williamson, Magnus Bradbury, and Josh Bayliss, were highlighted for bringing energy in the final quarter, with Bayliss scoring a try.

The final score of the match was South Africa 42-28 Scotland.
