Real Madrid make improved contract offer to Vinicius Junior amid Arsenal interest

Real Madrid have reportedly presented an improved contract offer to Vinicius Junior. The Brazil international’s current agreement with the Spanish club is set to conclude at the end of the next season. Discussions between the player’s representatives and Real Madrid officials, including general director Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat, took place in the Spanish capital recently.
Previously, there were notable financial disparities between the two parties. Reports indicated that Vinicius Junior was seeking an annual package in the region of €30million, which would encompass a base salary, performance-related add-ons, and a renewal bonus. The renewal bonus was identified as a key point of contention in the negotiations. While Real Madrid had initially been reluctant to meet these financial demands, sources familiar with the recent discussions suggest the club has now increased its offer to a level that acknowledges Vinicius Junior‘s significance to the team and its future plans.

Contract Negotiations and Club Interest
The 26-year-old forward now faces a decision regarding his future: whether to extend his contract with the club he joined in 2018, wait for free agency next summer, or consider an opportunity presented by Arsenal. Last week, reports indicated that Arsenal‘s ownership had approved pursuing a potential deal, with Vinicius Junior being a primary target for the reigning Premier League champions to strengthen their attacking line.
Despite the ongoing contract talks, Vinicius Junior has returned to Real Madrid‘s pre-season training. He recently participated in the World Cup for Carlo Ancelotti‘s Brazil squad, where he scored four goals in five appearances. He expressed his positive outlook on working under the new manager, Jose Mourinho, stating, “(I’m) very well, getting to know the new manager, the new players, and working really hard in training.” He added that Mourinho wants him to maintain his usual happy, positive, and distinctive playing style.

Real Madrid has been active in the transfer market this summer, with Jose Mourinho returning as head coach. The club has moved to reinforce its squad, bringing in players such as Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate, Denzel Dumfries, and Carlos Espi. Additionally, a deal has been agreed with RB Leipzig to sign winger Yan Diomande, as Mourinho aims to enhance his wide options. The club is also reportedly working on a move for Manchester City midfielder Rodri.
Vinicius Junior’s Impact and Future
The 2025-26 campaign marked Vinicius Junior‘s eighth season with Real Madrid, having joined from Brazilian club Flamengo in July 2018. During that season, he recorded 22 goals across all competitions for Real Madrid. The club finished that season without a major trophy for the second consecutive year, placing second in La Liga, eight points behind Barcelona.
Throughout his tenure at Real Madrid, Vinicius Junior has made 375 appearances, contributing 128 goals and 100 assists. He has been part of teams that secured three La Liga titles and won the Champions League twice. In the 2024 Ballon d’Or rankings, he finished second, behind Rodri.
A contract renewal is viewed by many as a logical outcome, given that both Real Madrid and Vinicius Junior have consistently prioritised continuing their association. Despite periods of significant distance in negotiations, with talks first commencing in January 2025, the club aims to retain one of its key players. Retaining Vinicius Junior would be a significant achievement for Real Madrid, not only due to his on-field contributions, such as scoring 22 goals and providing 14 assists in a previous season, but also because of his commercial appeal.
From a financial and reputational standpoint, a renewal is important for Real Madrid to avoid losing a prominent player for a fee below market value this year or for free next summer. Such a move would also prevent a direct European rival, Arsenal, who were runners-up in last season’s Champions League and semi-finalists two editions prior, from strengthening their squad with a key talent.
However, a renewal also carries potential risks. The team’s disappointing results over the past two seasons have placed considerable pressure on everyone at Real Madrid, including Vinicius Junior. The Brazilian player has faced criticism from some sections of the Santiago Bernabeu crowd in recent months, with some supporters reportedly not in favour of him receiving an extension and a pay increase.

For Vinicius Junior, an upgraded contract would enhance his standing within and outside the club, offering him the opportunity to continue his development as part of the team Real Madrid is building. It would also demonstrate his commitment to the challenge of performing under Mourinho this season, despite previous comments made by the 63-year-old manager about him earlier in the season. These comments followed an incident during Real Madrid‘s Champions League trip to Benfica on February 17, when a match was halted after Vinicius Junior alleged racial abuse. Sources close to the player indicated at the time that Mourinho‘s remarks did not sit well with the forward, though these same sources later confirmed that the Brazilian had no issues with Mourinho becoming the club’s new manager.
The player’s current contract is set to expire next summer.
