Liverpool face transfer setback as Diomande reportedly agrees Real Madrid deal
By Charlie Bradshaw — 26 July 2026 — 3 min read
Liverpool have reportedly encountered a setback in their pursuit of winger Yan Diomande, with widespread reports indicating that the 19-year-old has agreed to join Real Madrid. The Ivorian international was a target for several prominent European clubs during the current transfer window, including Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Manchester City, in addition to the Merseyside club.
Reports suggest that Real Madrid has submitted a bid for the player, with some sources indicating the transfer fee could reach €120m. Diomande is said to have agreed a five-year deal at the Santiago Bernabeu. This development means Liverpool, under new manager Andoni Iraola, will need to explore other options for a wide player, a position the manager has highlighted as a priority.

Diomande’s impact and playing style
Diomande’s market value has seen a significant increase after just one season in the German league. RB Leipzig acquired him for 20 million euros in the summer of 2025, and his current market value is estimated to be around 90 million euros, though his actual transfer fee could be higher.
The winger’s performances at the 2026 World Cup for the Ivory Coast national team drew attention, with Spanish newspaper Marca describing him as a player who keeps opponents “constantly on edge.” He spent time with Spanish side Leganes between January and June 2025 before his move to Leipzig, where he played a crucial role in the club’s return to the Champions League. The DFL recognised his talent by awarding him the best rising player prize for the 2025-2026 season, where he surpassed Luka Vuskovic of Hamburg and Ibrahim Maza of Bayer Leverkusen.
Diomande primarily operates on the left wing, where he is known for cutting inside onto his right foot. His individual skill makes him a consistent threat in one-on-one situations. During the 2025-2026 German league season, he led the league in attempted dribbles and successful individual duels, achieving a 55% success rate, according to Marca.
His ability to create numerical advantages near the opponent’s box and pick out teammates is evident in his statistics for expected assists and key passes. He also poses a direct threat in front of goal. While crossing is an area where he reportedly falls short, his overall impact in carrying the ball forward and creating chances positions him as a highly influential winger across all attacking phases.
Potential role at Real Madrid
At a club like Real Madrid, which does not heavily rely on a traditional out-and-out striker, Diomande’s reported shortcoming in crossing may not be a significant issue. His playing style is also expected to align with the defensive demands of coach Jose Mourinho. He is noted for his contributions to the press after losing possession, a role in which he excelled under his former coach Ole Werner.
Werner previously commented on Diomande, highlighting that his most distinctive quality is his capacity to maintain constant pressure on opposing defences. Diomande’s journey began in Florida, where he developed through the ranks with the Colorado Rapids in MLS before moving to Europe for trial periods with various Premier League clubs.
The move to Real Madrid is not thought to be connected to any potential departure of Vinicius Junior. Jose Mourinho’s side had previously shown interest in Bayern Munich’s Michael Olise, but the German champions issued a warning against any approaches, leading Madrid to deny interest in the player through an official statement.
The reported agreement for Diomande marks a significant development in the summer transfer window.
