Liverpool Agree Loan Deal for Barcelona Defender Ronald Araujo
By Charlie Bradshaw — 7 August 2026 — 3 min read
Liverpool have reached an agreement to sign Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan. The deal for the 27-year-old is a straight loan, with Araujo having signed a new contract with Barcelona last year, extending until 2031.
The Uruguay international joined Barcelona B in 2018 before being promoted to the first team. He has played for Barcelona since joining from Boston River in Uruguay in 2019, making 213 first-team appearances and scoring 14 goals.

Addressing Defensive Shortages
Araujo’s arrival will provide additional options for manager Andoni Iraola in the heart of the defence. This move comes after Ibrahima Konate departed for Real Madrid as a free agent at the end of his contract earlier this summer. Furthermore, the club has faced fitness concerns regarding other defenders.
Jeremy Jacquet, a 21-year-old summer signing from Rennes, has not featured in pre-season due to a minor issue and has not played since February following shoulder surgery. He has made fewer than 100 senior career appearances. Joe Gomez sustained a muscle injury in Liverpool’s initial pre-season game and is expected to miss the start of the Premier League season.
Teenage centre-back Giovanni Leoni is also still recovering from an ACL injury he suffered in September of last year. These injuries mean that Virgil van Dijk was Liverpool’s only fully fit senior centre-back prior to Araujo’s arrival. Captain Van Dijk was also absent following his commitments at the World Cup.
During the recent pre-season tour of America, Iraola had to rely on teenage centre-backs Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Mor Talla Ndiaye, with full-back Luke Chambers also deputising in the central defence. Ndukwe, a young Austrian, will need to be loaned out this season as he is not eligible for a work permit to play in England in 2026-27.
Araujo, primarily a central defender, can also provide cover at right-back. This versatility could be beneficial given that Conor Bradley is sidelined with a knee injury, which is expected to keep him out for the opening months of the 2026-27 season. Jules Kounde is the preferred starter at right-back for Barcelona, and when Kounde was injured in the spring, Eric Garcia was often chosen to play there.
Barcelona’s Shifting Plans
Araujo’s departure from Barcelona follows a period where his role within the team had reportedly changed. According to one report, he had fallen down the pecking order at Spotify Camp Nou. Last season, he reportedly lost his place in the starting line-up to Gerard Martin, who formed a partnership with Pau Cubarsi.
There were also reports that Bayern Munich had shown interest in signing Araujo between late 2023 and early 2024, with rumoured bids of EUR80 million, but Barcelona held off at that time. Araujo was granted indefinite leave by Barcelona at the beginning of December, returning to the team at the end of January.
The move for Araujo was agreed quickly, with Liverpool covering the player’s wages. His agent travelled to meet with Barcelona’s sporting director Deco to finalise the deal. This transfer means Barcelona will have greater scope to sign and register players, but it also leaves the club short-handed in the centre-back position, where manager Hansi Flick had reportedly put a freeze on signings.
Liverpool have also held preliminary talks with Paris Saint-Germain regarding the possibility of signing Bradley Barcola. However, there is understood to be a significant gap in valuation between the two clubs, with the Champions League holders valuing the 23-year-old at a high figure, making a deal difficult at this stage.
