Gothenburg: Mount injury overshadows Manchester United’s draw with PSG
By Charlie Bradshaw — 8 August 2026 — 3 min read
Manchester United secured a 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in a friendly match held in Gothenburg, but the game was marked by an injury to midfielder Mason Mount. Mount, who joined United from Chelsea in 2023, left the field after fewer than 20 minutes due to what appeared to be a foot injury. This incident adds to his history of injury problems since his arrival at Old Trafford.
Mount, 27, was replaced by Tyler Fletcher. His time at United has seen him restricted to 54 league appearances, with many of those coming as a substitute during his first three seasons. According to one report, he has been limited to 31 league appearances in his first two seasons, and 12 league starts after a hamstring injury last season. The midfielder has reportedly spent around 400 days on the sidelines since joining the club.

At the time of Mount’s injury, United were trailing 1-0 after Ibrahim Mbaye scored for PSG in the second minute. Despite missing several key players, PSG took an early lead. However, Bryan Mbeumo equalised for United in the 32nd minute, following good play from Amad Diallo.
Injury Concerns and Squad Updates
The match brought further injury worries for United when 40-year-old goalkeeper Tom Heaton sustained a right hamstring problem early in the second half while attempting a clearance. Heaton was replaced by Dermot Mee.
United manager Michael Carrick addressed Mount’s injury, stating that they wanted to be “careful” with the player after he was kicked. Carrick noted that the team had been fortunate with injuries recently and prioritised looking after Mount. Post-match footage showed Mount walking without assistance onto the team bus.
Mbeumo had an opportunity to score a second goal, but PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov made a save. Safonov later received jeers from the crowd after colliding with Joshua Zirkzee outside his area, an incident that might have resulted in a penalty in a competitive fixture.
Late in the game, United had additional chances from Fletcher, Shea Lacey, and captain Bruno Fernandes. Fernandes showed promising link-up play with new signing Youri Tielemans, who made his debut in Gothenburg, playing the final 26 minutes.
Carrick expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their ability to problem-solve during the match. He mentioned that there were positive signs that might not always be apparent to observers, which will help prepare the team for the upcoming season.
Upcoming Fixtures
United have two more friendly matches scheduled before the start of their Premier League campaign. They are set to face Leeds in Dublin on Wednesday, followed by a match against AC Milan in Wroclaw three days later. Their Premier League season is scheduled to begin away to newly promoted Hull City on August 22.
Carrick confirmed that a full squad, including Kobbie Mainoo, Lisandro Martinez, Marcus Rashford, and Matheus Cunha, will be available for the match in Dublin. Rashford has not played for United since December 2024. Carrick noted his history with Rashford, having played in the game where Rashford made his debut.
The manager’s comments suggest that despite the injury concerns, United are preparing with a comprehensive squad for their remaining pre-season fixtures and the start of the Premier League season.
