Stephen Fleming has been appointed as the England Men’s Test Head Coach, with Joe Root returning to the role of captain. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed the appointments, highlighting Fleming’s extensive coaching experience and Root’s previous leadership.
Fleming’s appointment follows a rigorous selection process. He is set to begin his role after the start of the upcoming Rothesay Test Series against Pakistan. During this series, Marcus Trescothick will serve as interim Head Coach. Fleming will then travel to the UK later this summer to prepare for the South Africa Test tour.

Fleming’s Coaching Background
Fleming brings an 18-year association with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to his new position, where he is regarded as a highly respected coach in world cricket. He led CSK to a record five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles as a coach and reached the final of the competition 10 times. Earlier this month, Fleming left his long-term association with CSK.
His coaching experience also includes leading Southern Brave to the final of The Hundred men’s competition in 2023. Additionally, Fleming has coached CSK’s affiliate teams in South Africa and the USA, as well as the Melbourne Stars. Former skipper Michael Vaughan noted that while some might point out Fleming’s lack of red-ball coaching experience, he is a very experienced manager and coach who has been involved in the modern game.
Vaughan suggested that Fleming’s appointment might also be strategic due to his close relationship with Brendon McCullum, the white-ball coach. Fleming, who retired from playing in 2009, has significant Test cricket experience, having made 111 appearances for New Zealand and scoring 7,172 runs.
Root’s Return to Captaincy
Joe Root’s return marks his second stint as England Men’s Test captain. His first tenure as captain was from 2017 to 2022. He holds the record for captaining England Men in the most Test matches, leading the team in 65 Tests and securing 27 wins. Root previously stepped down from the captaincy in 2022 after a 10-wicket loss to West Indies, citing the toll the role had taken on him.
Vaughan believes that the return to captaincy could be beneficial for Root, providing a new motivational trigger in the later stages of his career. He also suggested that Root had been dealt a “dodgy hand” during his initial captaincy, particularly with the focus on the 50-over World Cup and the challenges posed by the Covid pandemic.
Root expressed his honour and privilege at being asked to lead the team again, highlighting the rewarding nature of the job. He also mentioned his excitement to work alongside Fleming, whom he described as an exceptional leader with great knowledge of the game. Rob Key, Managing Director of England Men’s Cricket, stated that Root is passionate about leading the team into a new era.
Looking Ahead
Fleming expressed his excitement to join England as Test Coach, calling it one of the most prestigious coaching positions in world cricket. He is looking forward to working with the players and building on the progress made under Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes. Fleming also specifically mentioned his anticipation of working with Joe Root and Harry Brook, aiming to help them fulfil their potential.
Vaughan emphasised the need for England to focus on winning games, regardless of the style of play. He also pointed out the importance of addressing the technical side of batting within the team, suggesting that technical proficiency is crucial for success in Test cricket. Fleming’s four-year deal means he will coach England in the next two Ashes series.

Richard Gould, ECB Chief Executive Officer, stated that Fleming’s leadership style, alongside Root, can drive the men’s Test team forward.
Fleming will spend time with his family in New Zealand before flying to the UK later this summer to begin preparations for the South Africa Test tour.
