Chelsea are currently in discussions to sign Brighton striker Danny Welbeck. The 35-year-old forward has expressed interest in a move to Stamford Bridge, and there is optimism from Chelsea’s side that a deal can be finalised. Welbeck’s potential arrival signals a shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy, moving towards acquiring more experienced players.

The Blues are seeking to add experience to their squad, a strategy influenced by owner Behdad Eghbali, who indicated in April that the club’s model of signing younger players might need adjustment. Welbeck, who scored a career-high 13 league goals in 37 games for Brighton last season, is seen as a suitable fit for this revised approach. He has scored 51 goals in 201 matches for Brighton since joining in 2020.

Strategic Shift at Stamford Bridge

The pursuit of Welbeck represents a notable change in Chelsea’s transfer policy under manager Xabi Alonso. The club has recently focused on recruiting more established players, a departure from their previous strategy of signing young, inexperienced talent with potential. This is further evidenced by earlier attempts to sign Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka, 34, and interest in free agent John Stones, 31.

Welbeck, a former Arsenal and Manchester United striker, has made over 400 Premier League appearances. His signing would mark a clear move away from the club’s recent emphasis on youth. He signed a 12-month contract extension with Brighton in March, which runs until the end of the 2026-27 season.

The potential transfer would also reunite Welbeck with João Pedro, who moved from Brighton to Chelsea. Welbeck scored twice when Brighton secured a 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge last season. Other players and staff who have made the switch from Brighton to Chelsea in recent years include goalkeeper Robert Sánchez, midfielder Moises Caicedo, and striker João Pedro.

Impact on Chelsea’s Forward Line

Welbeck’s possible arrival raises questions about the futures of several current Chelsea forwards. João Pedro is currently considered the club’s first-choice option. However, the situations of Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha, Marc Guiu, and Nicolas Jackson are uncertain.

Delap, who joined Chelsea from Ipswich for £30m a year ago, was expected to have a second year to prove himself but his future now appears to be in doubt. Jackson, who spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich, was anticipated to remain at Stamford Bridge but is reportedly open to leaving due to interest from Aston Villa. Guiu is understood to be available for either a permanent transfer or a loan move, with Chelsea valuing him at approximately £25m.

Despite recently joining Chelsea from Strasbourg, there is also uncertainty surrounding the future of Dutch striker Emegha. The addition of Welbeck would provide Alonso with an experienced option, addressing perceived shortcomings that contributed to the team’s 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season. Chelsea have also signed Morgan Rogers for £117m and Marco Palestra, and are reportedly close to a move for Maxence Lacroix this summer.

Welbeck’s appeal to manager Alonso stems from his qualities as a player and a leader. He played in all but one of Brighton’s 38 Premier League games last season, achieving his best league goal return. His experience at top clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal is also seen as valuable for the Chelsea squad.

The striker’s strong form in recent years at Brighton, combined with his ability to perform in the penalty box, makes him an attractive prospect. Last season, among players with 30 or more shots in the Premier League, only four had a better shot-to-goal conversion rate than Welbeck’s 23 per cent, and only six had a higher share of shots on target than his 50 per cent. Welbeck signed his current 12-month contract extension in March.
